Investing in Gold Vrenelis
The Vreneli was Switzerland’s gold coin in circulation starting in 1896. The Vreneli was originally struck from 1896 to 1936, and all coins made since are restrikes. Each 20 Franc Vreneli coin contains 5.8 grams of gold.
In spite of Switzerland's reputation for both minting and refining gold bullion, the country does not manufacture any official gold coins currently. The Vreneli is the main Swiss gold coin available to investors. As the Swiss Vreneli was used as official currency, it was initially available in multiple denominations, including a 10 Vreneli, a 20 Vreneli and a 100 Vreneli coin. The most common size is the 20 Franc Vreneli.
The front of each Vreneli coin features an image of a Swiss girl, referred to as 'Swiss Miss', standing in front of the alps. The word 'Helvetia' is inscribed above her head. The reverse of the coin features the Swiss shield, with the famous Swiss cross in the center. The shields sits above some Oak leaves. At the bottom of the coin was its year of minting, and to the left and right of the cross is the coin's face value of 20 Swiss Francs. These coins were minted in Bern, and are marked with a small 'B' just to the right of the year of minting. Some Vreneli coins were minted at other nearby mints, and are marked with a different letter. These include Strasbourg (AB), Brussels (B.), Paris (A) and Strasbourg (BB). Coin restrikes, which were issued after 1936, are all marked with an 'L'.
A History of the Swiss Vreneli Coin
The size and purity of the Swiss Vreneli were first established in the early 1800s by Napoleon who set the standard with the introduction of the Latin Monetary League. This is why most European issue gold coins from the early 20th century have a 20 Franc weight of 5.8 grams.

Why Add Vreneli Gold Coins to Your Portfolio?
The Swiss Vreneli is made with a fineness of 900 pure gold. This was the standard in gold currency at the time the coin was minted. When you pair a variety of gold assets such as Vreneli coins with a mix of bars with platinum or silver bullion, your portfolio is more resilient, and will likely be capable of maintaining steady growth in most markets.
The Swiss Vreneli adds other benefits, though.
