Gold maple leaf coins have earned a reputation as one of the most sought-after bullion coins in the world. The Royal Canadian Mint has earned a reputation as one of the leading mints in the world. Modern gold maple coins come with extra security features. The coins are among the most traded in the U.S and the global market.

The first gold maple coins were produced in 1979. The pioneering coins weighed 1 ounce and contained .999 pure gold. The coins bore an image of a maple leaf on the back and a younger image of Queen Elizabeth II when she was 39 years old.

Apart from the 1 oz. gold maple leaf coins, the Royal Canadian Mint produced coins in different denominations. By November 1982, the RCM raised gold purity levels to .9999. In May 2007, the mint produced the first set of six 100-kilogram coins. These were the largest coins to be minted apart from Perth Mint’s 1-ton single gold Kangaroo coin.

The design of gold Canadian maple leaf coins has remained largely unchanged from the time they were minted for the first time. Canadian maple leaf coins have remained stable in design compared to other coins whose designs change rapidly like the Chinese Gold Panda and the Australian Kangaroo.

Gold maple leaf coins minted from 1979 to 1989 bore the image of Queen Elizabeth II when she was younger at 39-year-old. In 1990, the younger image was replaced with an older image of Queen Elizabeth II at 64 years old. In 2005, RCM minted coins with the image of the queen at 79 years old.

Size and Specifications:

  • The coins measure 1.181 inches an equivalent of 30 millimeters in diameter.
  • Gold maple leaf coins weigh 31.1035 grams or 1.00 troy ounce. The edge of the coin is reeded or serrated.
  • In 2013, the RCM engraved a laser maple leaf on the reverse and the front of the coin.
  • The security feature makes the coin difficult to counterfeit.
