On the obverse side, 2014 1/10 oz. gold Britannias feature the magnificent commemorative Diamond Jubilee effigy of Her Majesty the Queen. The portrait was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley ("IRB" inscribed directly below the HM's neck) to celebrate the Queen's sixty years on the throne, an achievement matched only by the reign of Queen Victoria.
Inscribed inside the border we find the words and letters "ELIZABETH II, D, G, REG, FID, DEF", as well as the face value of the coin. D, G, REG, stand for "Dei gratia Regina", a Latin title meaning "By the Grace of God, Queen". FID, DEF, translates to "fidei defensor" ("Defender of the Faith"). The phrases or letters have been used regularly on coinage since the 16th century. Displayed is the nominal value of the coin.
On the reverse side of the coin, we find the original 1987 "Standing Britannia" design by sculptor Philip Nathan, an image that is a symbol of national pride for the United Kingdom. His last name is inscribed as a signature below the picture.
Inspired by the 2nd century Roman Britannia, Nathan's Britannia design portrays her as a standing figure in a flowing gown armed with a trident and shield. She is wearing a Corinthian helmet reminding of the way she was portrayed by Roman tradition. Britannia also holds an olive branch - the eternal symbol of peace or victory.
