Description

The U.S Mint has produced gold Eagle coins with the same design since 1986 when they were first released. Lady Liberty, who was first designed in 1907, has always featured on the front of the Gold American Eagle coins since they were first produced. Similarly, a family of American eagles has appeared on the back of the coin. The U.S Mint plans to release a new back design in marking the 35th anniversary of the production of the gold coin.

  • The front of the coin features the image of Lady Liberty.
  • The backside of the coin is inscribed with the image of a family of bald American eagles.
  • Individual coins come in plastic flips while large orders ship in tubes of 40 coins.
  • The release of the 2021 ¼ Oz American eagle coins marked the 35th anniversary since the coins were produced for the first time.

The design used on the current gold eagle coins design was done by Augustus Saint-Gaudens who was commissioned by President Roosevelt to design the coin. Roosevelt passed an act during his presidency to add art to US coins, in an effort to make them look nicer. The most notable achievement by Saint-Gaudens was designing Lady Liberty that appeared on the coins from 1907 to 1933. In the original design, Lady Liberty was featured walking towards the U.S Capital building with rays of a setting sun illuminating her feet. The design also included 46 stars inscribed on the rim of the coins.

However, the design of the back of the American Eagle gold coin by mid-2021 will feature an American Bald Eagle from a left-profile. This is the only change in the design of the coins since they were first minted in 1986.

The Lady Liberty design featured on the American gold eagle coin was done by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1970. This design originally appeared on the Double Gold Eagle coins with a face value of $20. Miley Busiek designed the family of American Eagles that appear at the back of the coin in 1986. The family of eagles depicted on the coin includes an eagle flying over a nest with a female Eagle protecting her young ones.

The original design had forty-six stars around Lady Liberty to represent the number of states in the Federal Union by 1907. In 1948, the number of stars was increased to 48 to signify the addition of the states of Arizona and New Mexico to the union. The admission of Alaska in 1959 led to the increase of the number of stars on the gold eagle coin to 50.
