The reverse of the coin displays an assortment of instruments of the Vienna Philharmonic, including a Vienna horn, bassoon, harp, and four violins centered on a cello. The inscription WIENER PHILHARMONIKER encircles the motif. Both designs were shaped by the chief engraver of the Austrian Mint, Thomas Pesendorfer. The edge is reeded to further enhance security and protect investors against forgery.

History of 2014 Gold Vienna Philharmonics

The 1/2oz Gold Vienna Philharmonic was introduced in 1994. The Austrian Mint first struck Vienna Philharmonic gold coins in the 1oz denomination in 1989. It was then the only European legal tender gold coin produced on a large scale. At the time it had a face value of 2,000 Austrian schillings (ATS) and became immediately one of the world's best-selling bullion coins. The design on the coin remains the same each year; with only the year of issue changing. From the year of its introduction and until 2001, the 1/2oz Philharmonic was denominated in Austrian Shillings. The Philharmonic is the favourite gold coin of Europe. In 2013, Vienna Philharmonics accounted for 35 to 40% of sales in Europe, while they also remain a popular choice in Japan and North America.
