Together with the excellent mintage and the compelling artistry, this is a trademark coin with a complex design displayed with remarkably sharp precision on the relief. As a result the Philharmonic is a coin of legendary numismatic history. The 2014 issue is typically defined by the same characteristics and proves a hard competitor for similar gold products marketed by giants of the gold trade.

It is the perfect gold coin for every occasion, purpose and buyer. For coin enthusiasts, the aesthetic value of the coin makes it a priceless showpiece for their collection. The obverse of the coin depicts the grand pipe organ in the Vienna Musikverein's Golden Hall, one of Vienna’s most famous landmarks and home to the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra. The value, weight, fineness and year of issue are also featured on this side, together with the inscription REPUBLIK OSTERREICH. Thomas Pesendorfer’s classic award-winning design on the reverse side depicts a formidable motif: a montage of classical orchestral musical instruments, including a cello flanked on each side by two violins in front of a Viennese horn, bassoon, and harp. The inscription WIENER PHILHARMONIKER, written in German, names one of the most cherished symbols of the Austrian national character, the world-famous Viennese Philharmonic orchestra.
The Vienna Philharmonic is currently the only European bullion coin with a face value depicted in euros, although it is only legal tender in Austria. The 1/10oz Gold Vienna Philharmonic had a face value of ATS (Austrian Shillings) 200 from 1991 until 2001, but the 2014 issue is denominated in euros. More than 800 years ago, Duke Leopold VI of Austria decided to strike coins from the silver paid as bounty for the release of Richard the Lionheart, marking the beginning of the history of minting in Vienna. Since then, the Austrian Mint has been producing innovative coinage and currency, making it one of the oldest continuously-produced minting institutions in the world.
Dealers of dubious reputation are not uncommon, and the Austrian Mint undertakes a huge effort to protect unsuspecting buyers by uploading Philharmonic coin specifics on its site. The 2014 1/10oz Gold Vienna Philharmonic’s arsenal against counterfeiting consists of its small size, detailed and highly artistic design on both sides, and precise manufacturing and quality control. These exquisite coins are well known to every experienced dealer and the Austrian Mint has made sure that they are almost impossible to copy: even if the weight and dimensions seem to fit, the detail, depth and smoothness of the relief of an authentic 2014 Vienna Philharmonic is unmistakable.
