The Mexican Gold Peso Coin is a valuable collector’s coin that dating back to the early 20th century in 1921. It is also referred to as the Dos Pesos Gold Coin. The coin is one of the most valuable coins available south of the US border.

It is a popular coin often sought after equally by both investors and collectors as the coin has both investment and numsimatic value. Before the introduction of the South African Krugerrand in 1967, the Mexican Gold Peso Coin was considered the purest Gold Coin in the world due to its content of pure Gold.

Mintage of the Mexican Gold Peso Coins

Unlike most Gold Bullions available in the world, Mexican Gold Peso Coins are not minted annually. The coins have an interesting history. The first-ever versions of the coin where minted in 1921. They were first minted during the years 1921 – 1931, then during 1944 – 1947, then in 1949 – 1972. The responsible body for minting the Mexican Gold Peso Coins is the Mexico City Mint.

The Mexican Gold Peso Bullion Coin comes in six denominations with the largest weighing 1.2 troy ounces giving it a face value of 50 Pesos and the smallest weighing 0.0482 troy ounces, with a face value of 2.0 Pesos.  

Design

Front Design of the Mexican Gold Peso

The mint marks on the front of the Mexican Gold Peso features an inspiring image of Nike. Nike is the popular, winged, and inspiring Roman Goddess who symbolizes victory. The reason why the Goddess Nike is important to Mexicn is that she is considered the “Angel de la Independencia” which is an English to Spanish translation of the “Angel of Independence.” Behind the Goddess Nike, in the background are an inscription of the most iconic landmarks in Mexico, the Popocatepetl and the Iztaccihuati volcanoes. Below the front image is the coin’s face value of 50 Pesos and the coin’s year of mintage.

Rear Design of the Mexican Gold Peso

One thing you’ll notice on the rear side of the Mexican Gold Peso is the Eagle holding carrying a serpent in its beak. The Eagle is the Mexican coat of arms. The other smaller and more recent denominations of the coin feature the images of the revolutionary priest Don Miguel Hidalgo who was the front man in the liberation of the country from Spanish rule.

A Brief history of the Mexican Peso Gold Coin

The Mexico City Mint, the mint responsible for producing the Mexican Gold Peso is the oldest mint in North America, which began operating back in 1919. The first coin was minted in 1921 on the 100th Anniversary of Australian Independence from Spain. The coins were subsequently minted from 1921 skipping some years. Denominations of the coins vary and range from two to fifty Peso coins with each varying in weight.
