Quick Factsheet on the Chinese Gold Panda Bullion Coins

The Chinese Panda is one of the most valuable bullion coins available. These coins are backed by the world’s largest and fastest growing economy. The coin’s gold content is investment grade, and the Panda gold coin is one of the purest gold content available. In China, these are official gold bullion coins, meaning that they have legal tender value. These coins generate extraordinary interest, especially among numismatic investors.

Mintage

The Chinese Panda coin has been in existence for 37 years. The People’s Republic of China minted the first Chinese Gold Panda in 1982. Unlike other countries that have one centralized mint, the People’s Republic of China has several mints located in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Shenzhen responsible for minting the coins every year. In addition, the Chinese Gold Panda Bullion Coins do not have a mintmark which is often used to identify a coin’s origin and where it was minted.

Weight and Denominations of the Chinese Gold Panda Bullion Coins

The Chinese Gold Panda comes in five different denominations:

  • 30 Gram Coin with a 500 Yuan face value
  • 15 gram coin with a 200 yuan face value
  • 8 gram coin with a 100 yuan face value
  • 3 gram coin with a 50 yuan face value
  • 1 gram coin with a 20 yuan face value

The Chinese Panda series was updated in 2016, and the coin's weights were changed from ounces to grams. Prior to 2016 the Panda coin came in 1 Oz, 1/2 Oz, 1/4 Oz, 1/10 Oz and 1/20 Oz sizes.

Front Design of the Chinese Gold Panda

The front side of the coin depicts the Temple of Heaven. This temple is an old Chinese Taoist Temple that is located in central Beijing. On the top of the temple are the words, “Zhonghua Renmin Gingheguo” which translate to “the People’s Republic of China”. The bottom side of the coin has the year of issue of the coin inscribed on it. Since the first mintage of the coins in 1982, the design on the front of the coin has not changed.

The rear design, unlike the front, changes annually. Each year the coin features a different design of a Panda. 

Short History of the Chinese Gold Panda

The People’s Republic of China first minted the Chinese Gold Panda in 1982. The coin was meant to be used and circulated as part of the Chinese Monetary system. Investors saw its potential as an investment coin and also started using it as a bullion investment coin. The coin is minted by several mints located across China with Gold mined in the country. The coin does not have an identifier, which makes it impossible to determine where the coin originated from.
