The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Bullions were first minted in 1988 by the Royal Canadian Mint. Their main purpose was to complement the already existing Canadian Maple Leaf Silver and Gold Coins. On September 22, 1998, a special ceremony was held at the Royal Canadian Mint’s Headquarters where Junichiro Tanaka struck the first ever Maple Leaf Platinum Coin with a 140-ton coin press.

On November 17, 1988, the Bank of Canada made the coins available for sale to the public which meant the public would be able to acquire these coins at their face value. In the year 2002, the Royal Canadian Mint temporarily stopped minting new platinum coins to increase their value by artificially creating demand. Minting resumed in 2009 and new coins have been minted yearly since then.
