Design of the American Platinum Eagle

The design on the back of the American Platinum Eagle Bullion Coin is changed yearly based on a series that is dependent on the current theme determined by the current Chief Engraver of the US Mint. Front Design

The original front design of the coin was done by the Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti back in 1997. The design is a depiction of the statue of Liberty. The rear design changes on a yearly basis. Currently, the design on the back features the work of designer Justin Kunz and Sculptor Joseph Menna. On the top of the main design are the words, “E Pluribus Unum” which is the preamble to the US Declaration of independence. The main design is an engraving of Lady Liberty.
