Gold Krugerrand coins are a product of the South African Mint which is responsible for minting all coins in the country. The mint is located in Centurion, Gauteng near the administrative capital of Pretoria. The mint also manufactures coins for domestic and international markets. The South African mint was built after the 1890 gold rush that came after the discovery. This pushed Paul Kruger to establish a national mint in the same year. The mint became operational on 6th July 1892 in Pretoria.

However, the mint was temporarily closed after the Second Boer War broke out in 1902 which saw Britain annexing South Africa making it part of the British Empire. This led to the adoption of the pound sterling as the legal tender in the new colony. In 1919 the Mint Act was passed leading to the establishment of a branch of the Royal Mint in January 1923. Consequently, the mint produced gold sovereigns.

When South Africa gained independence from Britain, the mint was closed on 30th June 1941 to be reopened in 1941 as the South African mint. The mint now produces a number of currency and commemorative coins that include:

  • Coins of the South African rand
  • Bronze plated steel
  • Nickel-plated bronze
  • Sterling silver
  • 22 CT gold
  • 24 CT gold
  • Zimbabwean bonds &
  • South Sudanese pounds

The tube of 10 x 2022 1 ounce gold Krugerrands contains coins in brilliant uncirculated condition. Single coins come in protective plastic covers while orders of 10 coins ship in a plastic tube. Krugerrand gold coins are categorized as 22-karat gold coins that contain 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper. The South African mint has produced Krugerrand bullion coins in gold and silver since 2017.
