The gold Krugerrand was initially released in 1967 by the Rand Refinery in South Africa, and has come to be one of the most renowned gold coins available to retail gold investors in the precious metals market.
A Brief History of the Krugerrand
Perhaps the most widely owned gold bullion coin on the planet, around 48 million ounces of gold Krugerrands have been manufactured since the coin was introduced in South Africa in the year 1967. When it was originally issued, its purpose was to help encourage people to own their own gold, and because of its popularity, it is safe to say that this venture was successful. Because of its intended purpose of currency, these pieces are fashioned out of 22k alloy gold and copper together, which makes the coin more durable.
Design of the Krugerrand
The Krugerrand is easy to pick out by its features. On the front of the Krugerrand is the image of Paul Kruger, as well as a Springbok Antelope found on the back. It has a natural golden color that is unique due to the copper content of the coin. On the back of the coin is the date when the coin was minted.
The South African gold Krugrerrand is available in gold in 1 Ounce, 1/2 Ounce, 1/4 Ounce and 1/10 Ounce sizes. In 2016, due to high demand, the Rand Refinerly introduced the Krugerrand coin in silver also. This is currently only available in 1 Oz size.
About the Rand Refinery
The Rand Refinery is the largest single-site, integrated smelting and refining precious metals complex in the world. The refinery was founded in the year 1920 with the goal of refining gold and other precious metals in South Africa, helping to increase gold ownership and refining in South Africa as, up until that time, South African gold had only been refined in London, England. Since 1920, more than 50,000 tons of gold have been refined in the Rand Refinery. Not only does the Rand Refinery make Gold Krugerrands, they are also known for their minted bars, cast bars, minted coins, medallions and coin blanks, and semi-fabricated items intended for the use of the jewelry manufacturers around the world. They are also the only refinery authorized to create bullion Krugerrand coins both for local and international markets.
The Rand Refinery also produce the Loxodonta Elephant gold bar series, which is available in 1 Ounce size.
