About the Rand Refinery
The Rand Refinery is located in South Africa and is the largest integrated smelting and refinery complex designed for precious metals in the entire world. It was established in the year 1920 with the goal of refining gold and other precious metals locally, as up until the time that the refinery was established, gold was only being refined in London, England. The Krugerrand coin was the first coin to be minted in the Rand denomination in 1961 after the independence. The colonial republic used the English Pound as the denomination for coins. The design of the antelope has remained the same since the coin was introduced in 1967. Before the celebration, South African Mint designers examined the designs printed on Krugerrand gold and silver coins. The examination revealed that some of the original features in the design had been lost.
